The ROCKin’ Model Horse Extravaganza is being hosted by the Western Equestrian Club Team at Slippery Rock University to help support the team. We are an IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) sanctioned team that is made up of about 12 members.
IHSA provides collegiate riders of all skills- 6 levels of western riding, beginner walk/trot through open reining, the opportunity to compete individually and as teams in equestrian competition. It was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her riding ability or financial status.
Each Region hosts their own local IHSA horse shows followed by a Regional Championship competition. Qualified riders and teams then proceed to one of 3 Western Semi-Finals. From there, teams and riders qualify for the capstone event of the year- the IHSA National Championship Show which is being held in Lexington, Kentucky in May 2016.
For the 2014-2015 year, the Western Equestrian Club @ SRU was the Zone 2 Region 5 High Point Team, for the first time in the team’s history placing above schools like West Virginia University, California University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Clarion University. The team traveled to compete at Semi-Finals in El Reno, Oklahoma and placed 7th. The team also had 7 riders qualify individually for Semi Finals. Ginger Ullrich was also the Regional High Point Rider and competed at Nationals in the AQHA High Point Rider competition.
Since the spring of 2015, we have continued to sent many riders to the Semi-Final level and National level of competition. We have had success in the show ring at local and regional levels, and are looking forward to what the 2016-2017 season has in store. Our first show of the season is a home show at the Harlansburg show grounds on October 8, 2016.
